Migration methodology

SEO-safe CMS and Web Platform Migration

A migration is approved through evidence and decision gates, not only a working new interface. This playbook makes continuity, ownership and rollback explicit from inventory through post-launch governance.

Short answer

Record what exists, approve where each item goes, assess lifecycle constraints, and test the target before cut-over. Every phase has an input, work, decision gate and output. “SEO-safe” refers to continuity controls, not a guarantee of unchanged traffic or rankings; launch requires approval and a recoverable previous state.

01

Inventory and crawl

Input
Live URLs, CMS exports, analytics and access owners.
Work
Crawl pages/documents/media; capture versions, templates and critical journeys.
Decision gate
Coverage and access gaps have named owners; baseline approved.
Output
Versioned inventory and retained SEO/experience baseline.
02

URL and content mapping

Input
Approved inventory, content owners and language pairs.
Work
Map keep/move/merge decisions, media, fields and internal links.
Decision gate
Every retained or moved item has an approved destination; no default homepage redirects.
Output
Content-field map and one-hop redirect specification.
03

Lifecycle and dependency assessment

Input
Running versions, lockfiles, vendor support and configuration.
Work
Review advisories, update blockers, dependency ownership and compatibility.
Decision gate
Patch/upgrade/refactor/replatform decision supported by evidence; urgent fixes not delayed.
Output
Scoped intervention decision and remaining-risk register.
04

Target-platform plan

Input
Intervention decision, editorial needs and integrations.
Work
Plan content model, supported runtime, access roles, preview and operating ownership.
Decision gate
Target and integration assumptions accepted; scope exclusions recorded.
Output
Target design, migration sequence and acceptance plan.
05

Redirects, canonical, hreflang and schema

Input
URL map and existing metadata/schema baseline.
Work
Implement permanent one-hop mappings; preserve metadata, reciprocal languages and visible-schema parity.
Decision gate
Zero unmapped retained URLs, chains, wrong canonicals or language mismatches.
Output
Validated URL/metadata/schema comparison report.
06

Preview and regression tests

Input
Preview release, migrated content and acceptance plan.
Work
Test critical journeys, analytics/consent, keyboard/accessibility targets, performance and content parity.
Decision gate
Critical checks pass; warnings owned; restore rehearsal completed.
Output
Test evidence, unresolved findings and release recommendation.
07

Launch, monitoring and rollback

Input
Approved release, recoverable backup and named operators.
Work
Rehearse cut-over, content freeze, monitoring and rollback; verify real deployed versions.
Decision gate
Client approval; rollback triggers include broken critical journeys, wrong URLs or lost measurement/consent.
Output
Release record, live checks and recovery decision log.
08

Post-launch governance

Input
Release record, support horizons and outstanding backlog.
Work
Assign advisory review, version updates, tested releases, reporting and periodic lifecycle decisions.
Decision gate
Responsibilities and any contractual response targets agreed; no universal SLA inferred.
Output
Owned lifecycle schedule and maintained platform inventory.

Where this playbook fits

This is the acceptance and execution method. The existing CMS migration page owns the service-buying intent; the modernisation page owns the lifecycle intervention decision. Managed services own ongoing operations.

This is a lifecycle and modernisation engagement, not a penetration test, SOC, incident-response service or certification. Hosting and third-party infrastructure contracts require their own agreed scope. No security, zero-risk, zero SEO loss, ranking or universal SLA guarantee is made.
